is coconut oil the same as coconut milk?

Are coconut oil and coconut milk the same thing? i have seen coconut milk in my grocery store, but I didn't see coconut oil. The coconut milk was in the baking section and the oils were on in the same aisle, so that's why I'm wondering if they're the same. I'm interested in cooking with this because I've heard coconut is quite healthy.

They are obviously not the same. We use coconut milk for cooking and oil for health and beauty purposes. They have different processes. Since you are talking here of cooking, you should buy the coconut milk. Here in my country, we usually use fresh coconut milk for many native dishes and this adds more flavor and zest.

They are different. You can cook with either. I use coconut milk and add it to rice and chicken. Then I bake it up and it makes the chicken and the rice quite tender. It's a healthy oil. You can also use it for the skin. It's great to use to moisturize the skin and in the hair.

Yes they are different. coconut milk is derived by squeezing grated coconut meat while coconut oil is derived when you heated the coconut meat to release its oil.
Coconut milk are usually used for cooking dishes. Coconut oil are used for massages and some other purposes.

As the others said, coconut oil and milk are different but both are used for cooking. In fact, some nutritionists recommend using coconut oil instead of olive or vegetable oil. The milk (and cream) is used to flavor and cream up dishes. The other one is coconut water, which is used as a health drink (as it is high in micro-nutrients, including electrolytes).

Hope you enjoy it in your cooking, but remember that coconut milk tend to be high in fat (although you do get reduced fat).

Most of them have answered the question. However there is one thing which is not mentioned here. The way coconut oil is extracted, Ripe coconuts are broken and dried in sun.. The white coconut meat then turns translucent and loses all the water. It is then taken to oil extractor, this can be mechanical cold pressed (which is the best form of oil) or solvent extracted using high temperature (most common form of extraction today). Since the coconut meat is losing all the water in it, the water soluble nutrients in the coconut will not be extracted in the oil. This makes coconut oil far less nutritious when compared to coconut milk. Another thing is coconut milk will not have any cholesterol, however coconut oil has cholesterol.

However if you are going to use oil for frying and deep frying then coconut oil is the best. If you are going to consume oil without heating then extra-virgin seasam oil and extra-virgin olive oil are the best.

I finally found some coconut oil at a grocery store. It was $9 a jar! coconut milk is only about $1.50, although the cans are a little smaller. Still its much cheaper than the oil. The oil looked a bit like glue from what I could see inside the jar. It must take a lot more coconut to make the oil to have it be so expensive. I will have to try the coconut milk first and see how I like it.
What dishes does it go well with?

    Yep, very very different.

And it really just depends on what you're using it for as to if it's worth it. $9 worth of coconut oil is going to go a really long way if you only use a teaspoon here or there. It's nice for doing basic frying if you don't want to use heavy vegetable oil, for example, or it's awesome a chapstick replacement even! The milk goes great in thai dishes especially.

Exactly what I was about to say. I don't use coco milk to moisturize my skin though but for my hair. It's like putting mayonnaise on your hair but it works and natural ingredient for hair treatment. We use coco oil as a substitute to olive oil since olive oil is really expensive in the market.

Chicken curry. You can use coconut milk for that. Recipe can be google and you can find Thai version of it. By the way, you can use the coconut oil for massage (mixed it with essential oil like lavender).
